Research Professorship

Umut Uzer received his Ph.D. in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia in 2006. His undergraduate and master's degrees are in international relations from Bilkent University and Middle East Technical University, respectively, both located in Ankara, Turkey.

He studies state building, nationalism and ethnic conflict in the Middle East and the Caucasus. His book Identity and Turkish Foreign Policy: The Kemalist Influence in Cyprus and the Caucasus will be published by I.B. Tauris in November 2010. His publications include "Turkey as a Catalyst for the Alliance of Civilizations" in the Journal of Global Initiatives,2009, "Turkish Annexation of Hatay" in Journal of South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, Spring 2007 and "Racism in Turkey: The Case of Huseyin Nihal Atsiz" Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, April 2002, as well as book chapters in Symbiotic Antagonisms: Competing Nationalisms in Turkey (forthcoming November 2010 by the University of Utah Press) and "The Involvement of the European Union in the Middle East Peace Process" in Neighborhood Challenge: The European Union and its Neighbors (Universal Publishers, 2009).

He taught at the State University of New York (FIT), Smith College, the University of Maryland University College, Atilim University in Ankara Turkey and Eastern Mediterranean University in Northern Cyprus. Currently, he is writing a book on the birth and evolution of Turkish nationalism.
