Why I chose Political Science as a major:

Political happenings were always the topic of discussion when I was growing up. When the Tribune arrived Sunday morning, what ensued was ritualistic. We sat around the table, mused over Pat Bagley's cartoons, and expressed our ire at the ineptitude of the Utah Legislature. Political discourse has ever retained its prominence as a facet of my day-to-day life, and it was something of a foregone conclusion that I would go on to study it more extensively at university. Why study Political Science? Because; not everyone is, or will be, an engineer, nor a business executive, nor an artist- but everyone is, and will remain, a citizen.

Favorite tip for academic success:

Take the time to get to know your professors outside of the classroom, fully immerse yourself in the subject matter, and keep an open mind.

Extracurricular Activities:

I like to read, spend time with friends and family, and to drink coffee.

Research:

I'm intensely interested in political philosophy. I'm especially fond of Nietzsche, Rousseau, Arendt, Marx, Weber, and the Frankfurt School.

Internships:

I took part in the Hinckley Institute's Capital Encounters program this past summer and it was an excellent experience. Looking ahead to next summer, I hope to study abroad in Berlin.

Post-Graduation Plans:

The goal at this point in time is to go on to graduate school and to pursue a PhD in political science, then to work in academia as a political theorist. Graduate programs that I am most interested in include: John Hopkins University, UC Berkeley, University of Virginia, and Columbia University.
